Analysis of satellite data after the earthquake in Morocco
After the earthquake southwest of Al Hoceima on Februar 24, 2004 IKONOS imagery was analysed in order to identify the damage
assessment. An acquisition on February 25 was not possible due to the local weather situation. The company European Space
Imaging provided an IKONOS image on February 27 which was still 60 percent cloud covered. Therefore the affected region could
be only partially analysed and interpreted.
Satellite map of Al Hoceima
The city of Al Hoceima is the base for international humanitarian relief organisations. The tent camp sites, build up for
the relief activities and the southern part of the city could be mapped with an IKONOS image.

Satellite map of Ait Zaros
This satellite map shows the village of Ait Zaros in Northern Morocco. The area was affected by a severe magnitude 6.3 earthquake
on February 24, 2004 as well as by several aftershocks during the days to follow. Damages of the earthquake affects only certain parts of the village and are difficult to distinguish from old and abandoned
houses by means of satellite imagery. Rectangular boxes indicate damaged houses which could be destroyed by the earthquake. The image was taken during noontime on March 01, while the area was partly covered by clouds. Due to the occurrence of clouds
and their corresponding shadows approximately 70% of an area of 300 sqkm were screened and analysed in the course of this
survey.
