Background
The GMES initiative Respond provides different services to support the humanitarian community, mainly satellite-based map
prod-ucts like Situation Mapping or Crisis and Damage Mapping during urgent crisis situations. A variety of Users from all
levels of the humanitarian community are served with these products to support for example decision making and disaster relief
operations. Re-spond provides the training to all levels of user (decision maker, desk officers, field staff, etc.) to improve
the understanding and to intensify the technical interaction between users and Respond.
Focus of the training
The training aims at transferring knowledge about the services, the products, the processes and the techniques from project
side to the user side. Another aim is to initiate a discus-sion between users to improve the common understanding of the user
requirements.
Technical content
During the training an overview of Respond services and products and related topics like the International Charter "Space
and major Disasters" will be given by presentation held by experienced DLR Rapid Mapping staff and supported by the capacity
building team. The participants will get an introduc-tion to remote sensing in general (possibilities and limitations), Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) and satellite based mapping. This will be followed by a hands-on section to get practical knowledge
in the use of the techniques pre-sented. Depending on the compo-sition of the participants the level of technical detail will
be adjusted.
Targeted participants
Invited to participate is everybody who is involved into the humanitarian relief activities, already using Respond services,
interested in geographical information or in a better understanding of satellite based mapping. The training addresses all
levels of Users like decision makers, desk officers or field staff. The course is targeted at professionals with a humanitarian
aid background who require knowledge and skills on the use of GIS and Remote Sensing.
